Tips for Graduation Photoshoots

30/01/2026

Graduation photoshoots are more than just portraits. They capture a meaningful milestone and preserve memories of a major life transition. Graduation photos are often used as gifts for family members, included in thank-you cards, and kept in photo albums to look back on years later. A well-planned photoshoot makes the experience relaxed and the final images timeless. 🤍

Tip 1: Book your graduation photoshoot early

Graduation days and celebration weekends are among the busiest times of the year for photoshoots. If you wish to have your photos taken on the actual graduation day, booking up to six months in advance is recommended. That said, it is always worth asking, as last-minute availability can sometimes open up.

Graduation photoshoots can also be done months before graduation, for example for thank-you cards. And it is never too late. Photos can absolutely be taken after graduation as well.

Tip 2: Choose a location that feels like you

The location plays a big role in the overall mood of your photos. A studio photoshoot is a classic and timeless option. Clean, solid-color backdrops keep the focus on you, and beautiful window light can also be used for a softer look.

Outdoor photoshoots offer more variety and personality. Parks, gardens, beaches and urban settings create a relaxed and natural atmosphere. Popular locations are always an option, but personal favorite places are very welcome, and your photographer can also suggest locations that suit your style.

Tip 3: Read the photographer's guidelines

Your photographer will provide preparation and outfit guidelines before the shoot. These instructions are designed to make the session run smoothly and help you achieve the best possible results. Taking a moment to read them carefully will make the entire experience easier and more enjoyable.

Tip 4: Share your wishes and ask questions

There are no silly questions. If you have specific wishes or ideas, it is best to share them well before the photoshoot so they can be taken into account during planning. If ideas come up only during the session, it may require changes to the original plan.

If you do not have any specific wishes, that is completely fine as well. Your photographer will guide you, suggest poses and help create images that still feel natural and personal.

Tip 5: What if it rains?

Weather is a common concern, especially for outdoor photoshoots. If needed, the session can be rescheduled or moved indoors. There are also covered outdoor locations that work well even in rainy conditions, allowing you to keep the outdoor feel without stress.

Tip 6: Flowers and props

Flowers add a celebratory touch to graduation photos. Many clients bring their own flowers, and some choose multiple colors to create more variety in the images. The flower does not need to be a rose, any meaningful flower works beautifully.

Props are a great way to showcase your personality and interests. Sports equipment, musical instruments, ballet shoes or any item that is important to you can be included to make your photos more personal and unique.

Tip 7: Come alone or together

Graduation photoshoots can be done solo or together with others. You are welcome to bring a family member, sibling, partner, friend or even your entire friend group. Group photos are often relaxed, fun and truly memorable, and they pair wonderfully with individual portraits.

Extra tip: Turn your photoshoot into an experience 💫

If you are looking for something special, your graduation photoshoot can be turned into an experience. Sessions can be organized together with friends who are graduating at the same time and planned as small photo celebrations before the actual graduation day.

This can include group photos, a carefully chosen location, props, flowers or balloons. In some cases, even unique venues or special rentals can be considered. When costs are shared among several people, the experience can be surprisingly affordable. I am always happy to help with ideas and planning.
